Fund doubles with Lottery grant

A cancer care centre in Glasgow has been boosted with a £382,000 National Lottery grant.

The donation was allocated thanks to fund raising by Evening Times readers, who have themselves smashed the £250,000-mark.

The readers’ efforts were crucial in persuading Heritage Lottery Fund administrators to release the cash for a new Glasgow Maggie’s Centre because one of the main criteria of the fund helping any project is that it can only match funding that is already in place.

The Evening Times Appeal is still only half way to the £500,000 target, which will help build the centre, and equip it and keep it staffed for the first year.

The appeal has attracted the support of celebrities like patron JK Rowling, broadcaster Kirsty Wark and actress Elaine C Smith.

The drop-in centre is expected to be the first of three in the Glasgow area and follows the opening of one in Edinburgh. There are plans for a Maggie’s in Dundee.
