Fresh rush for tokens

Kids groups in Aberdeen are competing for big money as the third year of the Aberdeen Evening Express Kids 2000 appeal gets underway.

The campaign, now in its third year, raises money for schemes which will benefit youngsters in the region.

The Express prints daily tokens and the groups that manage to collect the most tokens by the end of the year are the ones given the cash.

During the past two years, a total of £18,500 has been given to children’s schemes and the paper is confident that this year’s appeal can smash all previous records.

Projects that qualify for the cash boost range from swimming clubs to scout groups, nurseries to dance clubs.

The money comes from reader donations and specially organised events.

The Express said: “We launched Children 2000 with a view to marking the millennium in a particularly meaningful way – to benefit the younger generation.

“Little did we know what a huge success it was going to be with readers collecting millions of tokens on behalf of kids – many of which they’ll never meet.”
