First week of Journal campaign Coin's It in

A campaign by the North Devon Journal to raise money for a local hospice has raised more than £1,200 in its first week.

The paper’s Coin It campaign, run in conjunction with North Devon District Council, asked readers to donate foreign currency – much of which will become invalid when 12 European countries adopt the Euro next year.

To kick-start the fundraising, the Journal placed an envelope inside every edition of last week’s paper, and readers have responded by filling them with foreign notes and coins.

Branches of the NatWest bank across Devon have been inundated with donations of foreign coins, which will be converted into sterling and donated to the North Devon Hospice.

Deputy council leader Dave Butt said: “We are absolutely delighted and thrilled with the response.”

Journal managing editor Andy Cooper said: “The appeal is far from over. There is still plenty of time for people to do their bit and seek out loose change and notes which they will probably never use again.

“It will all go towards bringing comfort to the patients of the North Devon Hospice.”
