First battle won in Recorder campaign

The Ilford Recorder has won its first victory in a campaign to bring the high-speed rail link to the borough.

It has been revealed that the option for the first CrossRail line – a joint venture between Transport for London and the Strategic Rail Authority – will include a station in Ilford. It is the first time Ilford has been included in core routes on shortlisted options from Stratford.

The preferred option will be announced in the autumn followed by public consultation before the final scheme for line one is announced at the end of 2002.

Leading up to this week’s announcement, the Recorder published a series of articles highlighting the importance of the rail scheme to the future of Redbridge, and calling on London Mayor Ken Livingstone not to ignore Ilford when the decisions are made.
