First £1,000 for Delia

A campaign by the Derby Evening Telegraph to bring a young African woman to Derby, so she can train as a nurse, has raised its first £1,000.

Cheques from well wishers have begun to flood in just a week after Delia Matewere’s story was highlighted in the Telegraph.

Delia studied for her GCSEs in Derby in 1997, but was forced to return to her own country for personal reasons.

Around £5,000 is needed to help Delia fulfil her dream of returning to study in Britain.

Mackworth College, Derby, has agreed to waive the £3,600 fees needed for Delia to take an access to nursing programme, but Delia still needs money to live on.
