Fireworks plea wins "overwhelming" response

The South Wales Evening Post says it has been “overwhelmed” by the response from readers to its campaign against the misuse of fireworks.

The Post has collected 5,500 signatures on a petition that will be presented to the Prime Minister.

Readers of the Post had been writing to the newspaper telling how the loud bangs had been scaring pensioners and pets in the area.

The problem had lasted for a long time, spanning from September to weeks after November 5.

The Post printed petition forms and invited readers to send in their own personal experiences of the problems of fireworks.

Head of news Jonathon Isaacs co-ordinated the campaign and was pleased with the outcome.

He said: “We expected a good response but were overwhelmed. Petition forms poured in for days and we received dozens of letters from readers concerned about the effect of bangs were having on their pets.

“What was particularly pleasing was they contained warm praise for us for starting the campaign.”

The petition forms are still arriving at the newsroom, and they will be passed on to South Wales MP Huw Irranca-Davies, who has been running a related campaign.

The MP has also collected 5,000 signatures and believes that combined with the Post’s campaign, a Private Members Bill on the regulation of fireworks sale and use has a good chance of becoming law.
