Farmers Fund tops £137,000

A Yorkshire Post-backed campaign to help the victims of foot and mouth, has received a massive boost – thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor.

The Farmers Fund has now raised more than £137,000 – including the £50,000 gift, which will help farmers who have suffered at the hands of the long running crisis.

The fund is a dual effort by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and the Yorkshire Post, and was established to channel financial support for the farmers through three charities, the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI), the Farm Crisis Network and the Samaritans.

Chairman of the agricultural society’s grant and education committee, Bill Cowling, said: “Every donation is valuable to us, but a gift of this size lifts everyone’s spirits.

“We’ve spoken to the charities who will benefit and they are thrilled.

“We have been able to help with the immediate cash problems but as the disease appears to be on the wane, we can now look ahead to helping people to plan for their future.”

The fund was set up six weeks ago, with the Yorkshire Agricultural Society making an initial donation of £50,000.
