Express front page wins campaigners extra cash

A front page story from more than 30 years ago has secured Cod War compensation for trawlermen in Scotland.

The article, in the Aberdeen Evening Express, showed the Government how fishermen were entitled to more compensation than they were originally granted.

It proved to the Department of Trade and Industry that there had been a strike which prevented fishing for 12 weeks – which meant their terms of service were extended because a break of that length counted as discontinuous service.

But now fishermen involved in the strike are now eligible for a claim, boosting the pay-outs for trawlermen and their families.
