Evening Post is fighting back

A regional newspaper has launched a series of initiatives in a campaign to curb street crime after a 77 per cent rise in robberies in Avon and Somerset last year.

Launching the campaign, the front page showed the faces of local crime victims and said: “This is the human face of urban crime – the real victims behind the statistics of muggings and robberies.

“Now the time has come for us all to take a stand.”

The Bristol Evening Post has introduced the Save Our Streets initiative to “reclaim streets from the robbers who terrorise innocent members of the public”.

The paper has teamed up with the police to raise awareness of how people can reduce their chances of being mugged.

Readers can buy a personal safety alarm for £5 and are being urged to display a free Evening Post Save Our Streets poster.

The Evening Post said that about 95 per cent of muggers commit crimes to feed a drug habit.

Over the next few months it will be lifting the lid on the problem and launching a number of initiatives designed to reclaim the streets back from muggers.
