Evening Post backs appeal to help elderly crash victims

A special “OK Fund” has been launched, with the backing of the Bristol Evening Post, to help two elderly friends who were horrifically injured by a stolen car.

The fund takes its name from the initials of Olive Harley, (89), who lost both legs in the accident, and Kitty Stiley, (85), who also suffered severe leg injuries.

Friends and neighbours are trying to raise money to help the women when they are finally discharged from hospital.

The Evening Post has donated £300 to the appeal, and is urging others to do the same.

It said: “We are not asking for a fortune but we do want to help pensioners Olive and Kitty from Henbury. Here in the twilight of their lives they have become the victims of that most inappropriately named of crimes – joy riding.

“If you can give anything. Please do.

“And together we can let these two ladies know that the world which they have seen change so dramatically in their lives still has some love and compassion in it.”

Organisers estimate that about £2,000 is needed as Olive will need an electric wheelchair while Kitty will need a walking frame and adaptations to her home to help her move freely about the house.

Evening Post deputy editor Stan Szecowka, said: “Olive and Kitty will need help when they come out of hospital and we fully support the fund-raisers’ efforts. I am sure the appeal will soon reach its target.”
