Evening News leads bid to 'bin the blades'

The Norwich Evening News is joining forces with the police to launch a knife amnesty in a bid to halt the rise in attacks on the streets.

Knife owners in the area will be given the chance to Bin their Blades at a number of police stations across the city.

Anyone taking part will be guaranteed anonymity, as long as they are not handing in a weapon that has been used in a serious crime.

Chief Supt Peter Fraser, head of Norwich police, said: “It’s unlawful in most circumstances to carry knives, and those who do face serious consequences.

“This provides an opportunity to dispose of knives and to take them out of circulation.”

Evening News editor David Bourn said: “If only one potential murder weapon is taken off the streets, the Evening News believes the campaign will be justified.”

A similar amnesty was held across Norfolk during the winter of 1995-96 and more than 1,100 weapons were handed in.
