Evening News hoping to be changing rooms

The Norwich Evening News is calling on its readers to help revamp a room at a centre for young people with special needs.

The newspaper has teamed up with staff from the Hamlet Centre to launch an appeal to raise £10,000 to transform their current changing room into a safer, more hygienic and brighter place to be.

As part of the transformation, centre staff hope to buy a new changing bed to replace an old drop-down one which has been used for many years, re-paint the room, replace old cupboards with better storage facilities and install new flooring.

They would also like to knock a door through from the changing room into the toilet next door, so children and adults have more privacy while using the facilities.

Terri Nelson, care co-ordinator at the Hamlet Centre, said: “Children’s needs have changed since this room was first installed.

“We are looking after more children with complex medical needs than we ever did before, and we are running more playschemes, which take place in the summer and every half-term with some 40 children taking part every day.”

  • The Hamlet Centre Trust was founded in 1972 by Jack and Margaret Wymer, who were themselves disabled.
