Evening Mail vows to lobby Government over danger road

The North West Evening Mail has vowed to lobby the Department of Transport over vital improvements needed on a danger road.

The Cumbria-based newspaper is adding its weight to a campaign calling for changes following another death on the A590.

Editor Steve Brauner said: “For too many families, it is the stretch of tarmac that killed their child, parent, sibling or friend.

“Twenty-six-year-old soldier Clive Bryant Wilding left a two-year-old son and a fiancee when he became the latest victim of the road on Friday.

“If nothing is done to improve that road he will not be the last.”

Local residents and businesses have long campaigned for an A590 bypass, and the paper has now said it will write to Transport Minister John Spellar, asking him to look again at the treacherous stretch of road.

It has also invited readers to write in with their views about what should be done, and has said it will be sending the minister regular reports about the toll the A590 is taking on the community.
