Evening Express posters launch crackdown

Vandals causing misery in the town of Fraserburgh have been put in check – thanks to a campaign backed by the Aberdeen Evening Express.

Operation Repair was launched by the police in November to crack down on the damage caused by mindless yobs.

The Evening Express got involved by printing scores of posters urging people to phone a special hotline if they spotted any vandalism taking place.

And the campaign was such a success that police are hoping to repeat it in the coming months.

During the blitz, the number of vandalism incidents slumped by 27 per cent and 16 people were arrested and charged.

Now police are planning to extend the scheme to include Peterhead which has been suffering similar problems.

Chief Inspector Colin Menzies said: “It was very successful and quite clearly had an impact on the vandalism situation in the Fraserburgh area.

“Not only did the number of recorded incidents drop but the detection rate increased.”
