Education victory – but the fight goes on

A campaigning Cheshire weekly has secured a victory in its fight for scrutiny on school selection procedures.

The Warrington Guardian has backed parents on its patch who were refused entry to a meeting that would decide the fate of a primary school in Latchford.

The paper has battled against the secrecy of the Schools Organisation Committee.

The independent committee voted to exclude the press and the public from its key meeting in July and also refused to reveal who sat on the committee.

News Editor Stephen Rylance said two more controversial decisions on the future of schools were due shortly.

But he said: “As a result of our campaign against the secrecy of the Schools Organisation Committee, David Blunkett has promised to take a close personal interest in the matter and is to review the rules and guidelines for SOCs nationwide.

“As our SOC is about to make two more controversial decisions on the future of schools, inevitably a storm is brewing.”

The paper’s letters pages have been packed with people writing in support of the paper – and in support of the committee.
