Echo's speed plea sees results

A safety campaign spearheaded by the Lincolnshire Echo has resulted in new speed limits outside some of the county’s schools.

The Slow Down campaign aimed to get drivers to cut their speeds and make it safer for children going to school. Top of the campaign’s agenda was a 20mph limit.

Now, six months after the campaign was launched, new 20mph speed limits are to be trialled outside a handful of Lincolnshire schools.

New 20mph advisory signs, highlighted by flashing lights, are to be installed to deter speeding at peak dropping-off and collection times.

If successful, the pilot scheme could be applied to all of Lincolnshire’s 375 schools.

Lincolnshire County Council will also lobby the Government to impose double fines and penalty points on drivers caught exceeding the current 30mph limits outside schools – a system applied in America.

As well as campaigning for changes, the Echo has offering road safety advice for drivers and pedestrians.

It has been carrying interviews with the parents of children who have been knocked down and has also been looking at the practicalities of making changes to driving conditions to slow motorists down.
