Echo on the lookout for danger

The Lincolnshire Echo is spearheading a campaign to get drivers to cut their speeds and make it safer for children going to school.

The Slow Down campaign is asking drivers to think carefully when they are driving near schools, cut down on their speed and look for danger.

A 20mph limit in such areas is at the top of the campaigners’ agenda.

The AA, local councillors, highways managers and members of the public are all supporting the campaign.

Editor Mike Sassi said: “In the year to April, 146 youngsters in the county were injured in traffic accidents, a cold statistic that alone does not fully express the widespread pain and anguish caused to all involved.

“Ideas to reduce this toll now include 20mph speed limits in school areas, part of a broader initiative which is looking to set up Community Travel Zones.

“To succeed, however, a thorough rethink of the risks to children on the roads will need substantial input by, and support from, the public.

“That is why the Lincolnshire Echo is campaigning for renewed awareness of this problem.”

As well as campaigning for changes, the Echo is offering road safety advice for drivers and pedestrians in a bid to cut the toll.

It has been carrying interviews with the parents of children who have been knocked down.

And it has been looking at the practicalities of making changes to driving conditions to slow motorists down.
