Echo keeping safety in the spotlight

The Southern Daily Echo has launched a poster campaign after a spate of sex attacks on women in the Fareham area of Hampshire.

The posters have been drawn up with the help of Hampshire police and give advice to women on how to avoid becoming a victim.

Local pubs have been given copies of the posters which also have a helpline telephone number on them.

There have been seven attacks on lone women walking home at night in the past six weeks.

Southern Daily Echo journalist Dan Newling said: “The police are taking these attacks very seriously and we decided to get behind them. The posters advise women on how to get home safely at night because that’s when this guy is about.

“The response has been phenomenal – everyone has got behind us. We have had the backing of the police, the local council, shops and the local MP Mark Hoban.”

  • The operation launched by Fareham police, codenamed Esk, has resulted in three people being arrested but released without charge.
