Echo joins parking row

Angry traders in Bournemouth have received the backing of the local press in their battle against increases in parking charges.

Shop-owners are joining forces with the Daily Echo to fight council plans to increase the price of parking above the rate of inflation.

They say the rise will badly affect trade and could prove devastating because of the added threat of Southampton’s Westquay shopping centre.

The newspaper plans to encourage shop workers and customers to lobby the council against the charges and force a rethink.

The Echo said: “Part-time shop workers will be hit hardest. They will spend their first hour at work simply earning their day’s car parking.

“We are launching the campaign to urge councillors not to introduce crazy increases.”
