Echo initiative helps clear streets of crime

Forty suspects have been arrested after Merseyside police joined forces with the Liverpool Echo to cut down on street crime.

Detectives made the arrests during the past week following a massive drive to clear the streets of south Liverpool of muggings and other violent crimes.

Police drafted in extra officers to cope with the mountain of information on suspects provided by readers for the Be Streetsafe campaign run by the Echo.

The campaign, launched this week, is already proving beneficial, resulting in the questioning of a man wanted over an alleged racist attack where a elderly black man was hit over the head with a claw hammer.

Detective Chief Inspector Geoff Tickle said: “This will not end here. It is an on-going operation. We have brought people in for everything ranging from robberies through to indecent assault and the average street assault.”

As part of the Be Streetsafe campaign, police have distributed 3,000 crime prevention leaflets to students who revealed as ‘very vulnerable’. Officers have also marked 4,000 mobile phones with ultra violet ink in a bid to stamp out crime.
