Echo backs campaign to preserve theatre

A campaign to raise more than £1m to preserve one of Britain’s most historic and unusual theatres is being backed by the Northern Echo.

Trustees at the Georgian Theatre in Richmond are aiming to carry out an extensive restoration project on the building – the only one of its type still in its original form.

Almost £700,000 has already been pledged, through a Heritage Lottery Grant and a major private donation, and a public appeal has been made to raise the remaining £375,000.

Northern Echo editor Peter Barron said: “The theatre offers a unique night out that is well worth preserving. It is also a unique piece of Britain’s history – once there were 350 similar auditoriums in the country, but the Georgian Theatre is the only one remaining in its original form.

“This project is also very important for the town of Richmond. There are many North Yorkshire market towns that are fighting to survive in the 21st Century but, despite its wonderful setting, the centre of Richmond is facing possibly the sternest test of them all.”The chance to restore the Georgian Theatre is an opportunity the town should not overlook.”

Full details of the restoration plans have not yet been unveiled, but it is expected to include work to take the auditorium back to its 18th Century heyday, and improved lighting and disabled access.

If the appeal reaches its target by the end of the year, work will start early next year and should be complete in time for the start of the 2003 season.
