EADT campaigns to stop decline in Harwich services

The East Anglian Daily Times has launched a campaign to stop the decline of community services in the historic town of Harwich.

The Hands Off Harwich campaign follows an announcement that the town’s magistrates court is to close with the service to be centralised in a new building in Colchester.

The closure comes on top of the local police station losing its reception desk at night and Harwich Hospital losing its overnight minor injuries unit.

The campaign aims to raise Harwich’s profile and show people what the town has to offer, while ensuring the town has the services it deserves.

EADT editor Terry Hunt said: “This newspaper has been at the heart of, and strongly supporting, local communities for more than 125 years.

“While we are delighted to see Harwich thriving, we are concerned vital community services are being downgraded and feel the time is now to say ‘enough is enough’.

“I would urge everyone who is proud of Harwich and wants the town to prosper to sign our petition calling for its community facilities to be protected and improved, not taken away.”
