Dramatic start to Echo campaign

A chilling display by firefighters gave the Lincolnshire Echo’s new road safety campaign a dramatic launch.

Members of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue gave onlookers a glimpse of the equipment and procedures used to rescue victims of horrific road crashes.

The display marked the start of Staying Alive 2001, the third incarnation of the Echo’s efforts to slash the number of road accidents in the county.

The campaign was first launched in 1999, after a year when 105 people lost their lives on Lincolnshire roads.

Backing the paper’s efforts are Lincolnshire Police, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, Lincolnshire County Council, Lincolnshire Health Authority and the Highways Agency.

Assistant Chief Constable Jon Stoddart said: “By 1999, if you were in a road accident in Lincolnshire, you were twice as likely to die than if you were in anywhere else in the country.

“Two years on and we have a road safety partnership to be proud of. Now we have to move forward and involve the public in road safety initiatives.”
