Downing case on TV tonight

The Matlock Mercury’s long-running campaign supporting the claims of innocence for convicted murderer Stephen Downing is to be highlighted in a special feature on ITN’s Channel 4 News programme tonight (Thursday August 24).

One of ITN’s top presenters and reporters Kirsty Lang, producer Yvette Edwards and a camera crew, spent two days filming at the Matlock Mercury offices and in locations around the Dales on Monday and Tuesday.

Interviews were filmed with editor Don Hale – who has spearheaded the campaign for the past six years – at the Mercury offices in Bakewell Road and at the scene of crime in Bakewell cemetery.

Stephen Downing’s parents Ray and Juanita also took part in interviews at their home in Stanton View, and reports from key witnesses will be featured.

The crew have been examining various alleged anomalies with the scene of crime evidence and conclusions drawn, and taken a particular interest in the established claims that others were probably responsible for the murder of Mrs Wendy Sewell in September 1973.

ITN have asked for copies of pictures used during the campaign and have pledged to promote the feature via their national news network.

Channel 4 News is one of the most prestigious evening news programmes on mainstream televison and regularly highlights special features of national interest.

The Stephen Downing news item will appear on Channel 4 from 7pm on Thursday August 24.
