Donations soar after blood plea

Blood banks in north-east Scotland have received a welcome top-up after a plea to readers of the Evening Express.

The Aberdeen paper’s Life Blood campaign helped boost attendance figures for blood donations by 40 per cent in the first two weeks.

Some 600 new donors have signed up so far.

Donor office manager Gladys Watt said: “The response to the Life Blood campaign was phenomenal.

“Blood stocks were boosted at a time when we would have been struggling to meet demand.

“We are delighted that some of these donors are now returning to give another donation every 12 weeks.”

The campaign will last until April – which will give donors the chance to have made three donations and claim their badge of honour. The campaign will be kick-started in the summer when stocks traditionally fall low as donors go on holiday.
