Dig Deep gathers support

The Derby Evening Telegraph’s campaign to help county farmers and businesses hit by the foot and mouth epidemic has been applauded in the House of Commons.

South Derbyshire MP Mark Todd, whose constituency has been badly affected by the disease, paid tribute to the Evening Telegraph during a parliamentary debate on the crisis.

He told MPs: “I commend the Derby Evening Telegraph’s campaign to aid farmers in the area.

“It works directly by fundraising and encouraging support for rural enterprises that have been badly affected by foot and mouth because visitors and business partners have been discouraged from coming to see them.”

The paper is asking its readers to help local farmers by raising money and by buying goods from local businesses.

In its first day, the Dig Deep for Derbyshire Farmers fund approached £5,000.

All the money raised will be used to pay bills and buy essential provisions for struggling farmers throughout Derbyshire.

Dozens of businesses across the county have also pledged their support for the campaign.
