Dial-a-drug story is highlighted

A paper’s battle to tackle the drugs menace in Swindon has been given a boost with the support of the government’s deputy drugs czar, Mike Trace.

The Swindon Evening Advertiser was singled out for praise by Mr Trace for its exclusive about a dial-a-drug operation run from a row of phone boxes in the town centre.

The story had described how drug users had arranged their daily fix by calling dealers from the phone boxes.

Mr Trace, speaking whilst on a visit to launch a regional action team to tackle drugs, said: “This is exactly the sort of sitation the Action Team needs to respond to.”

Swindon has more than 1,200 heroin users and the number is rising all the time.

Drugs are readily available in the town because of its position on the M4 corridor, a route used by drug dealers to bring heroin to the West.
