Crime hotline set up by Gazette

The Basingstoke Gazette has joined forces with Hampshire Constabulary to launch a burglary hotline.

The hotline, part of the paper’s Burglary – Let’s Beat It campaign, has been put in place by The Gazette but will only be answered by police officers in the burglary team.

The campaign was launched at the beginning of the year to help tackle the rising number of house break-ins in the Basingstoke area.

To put the bite on the burglars, the police and The Gazette are urging people to call the hotline with information about the people who are stealing or handling stolen goods.

Anyone who calls the number will get through to a police officer on the frontline of the burglary blitz.

All information given will be confidential and callers will be allowed to remain anonymous if they wish.

Gazette editor Mark Jones said: “The officers trying to get to grips with the problem are determined to make an impact – but they need the help of local people.

“We now hope the launch of the new hotline will prove to be another tool that helps the police bring the burglars to justice.”
