Committed to saving lives

Three months after it began, the Nottingham Evening Post Start-a-Heart appeal is close to reaching its target.

The campaign urged readers to send in donations so that 25 life-saving defibrillators could be bought for busy public places.

Now the figure has reached 19 after Rushcliffe Borough Council set aside £22,500 for nine defibrillators because of the Evening Post’s appeal.

Rushcliffe Coun George Buckley said: “In the event of an emergency we are committed to having defibrillators in our leisure facilities, and staff who are fully trained to use them.”

Broxtowe Borough Council has also decided to respond to the campaign by buying four of the machines for its leisure centres.

  • In a separate appeal run by the Carmarthen Journal, £50,000 has been raised to equip police cars with the life-saving defibrillators.

With donations still arriving, Journal editor Alan Osborn said: “The support of the public has been overwhelming.”
