City FC's future is close to safety

Another football club in crisis has led to another regional newspaper fighting to save the future of its local team, Bath City.

This time it is the turn of the Bath Chronicle, which is asking readers to join its Share in our Future campaign to save the Twerton Park-based Doc Martens Premier League side.

The idea is to raise enough cash to enable a trust to buy back control of City from its majority stakeholder, which says the move would ensure the club’s survival.

If it fails to raise the final £120,000 required within six months, it will lose its chance to take over.

Chronicle editor David Gledhill said: “The football club is part of the fabric of the city and we are pleased to support efforts to give it a greater sense of confidence and control.”

The crisis was sparked when Bristol Rovers moved away from Twerton, taking their £100,000-a-year rent with them.

A club vice chairman was approached for a loan to cover the shortfall, which he provided in return for a 51 per cent share of the club, and now a £500,000 bid to buy it back is close to success.
