Citizen crushes cars

Dozens of vehicles in Gloucestershire are to be towed away and crushed following a campaign backed by The Citizen.

Operation Dodger – a joint council and police initiative – was launched to rid the city’s streets of abandoned, untaxed and rusting vehicles.

The Citizen then began its own scheme, Don’t Dump It, in support of the campaign.

Using information from readers, the paper built up a ‘Car Dump Dossier’, which it passed on to campaign bosses, and now these cars are to be destroyed.

Most of the vehicles are untaxed, many have been vandalised or stripped of parts and are causing obstruction or occupying parking spaces.

Operation Dodger co-ordinator, Claire Yeatman, said: “These vehicles cause a real headache and are an eyesore – we have been inundated with calls from the public.”

Sergeant Bob Keeble added: “Besides being potentially dangerous – especially for inquisitive children – abandoned vehicles often cause obstructions. And if the owners can be traced they will find it a costly business – they have to pay all the recovery costs.”
