Centre for child abuse victims is launched thanks to Mercury

A centre for victims of child abuse has been launched thanks to the generosity of Leicester Mercury readers.

The unique centre, at a secret location in Leicestershire, is the first of its kind in the country and is expected to become a landmark project.

It is the product of the Mercury’s St Bernard’s Campaign, which was launched with Leicestershire police at the start of the year.

The campaign asked businesses and individuals to help transform an empty house into a haven where children could be taken for examination and interview after an incident of abuse was reported to the police.

Hundreds of readers came forward to pledge their time, money and equipment to create St Bernard’s as part of the paper’s first “challenge” of the year.

Within the house, there is a small medical facility, two interview rooms and two rooms from where police officers and social workers can monitor interviews via discreet video cameras.

There are also two “dens”, each with a television and stuffed with toys and games, where youngsters can relax, a well-equipped kitchen and two bathrooms.

Mercury editor Nick Carter, said: “The St Bernard’s sanctuary for children who have been victims or witnesses the evil of child abuse, neglect or violence should not have to exist.

“But with our world the way it is, there is a real need for somewhere that looks as much like a secure home as possible and can offer comfort and support.

“We all have mixed feelings about the news that the unit will be helping the first children within a few days. It would be better if no one needed that help and the unit could stand empty.

“Sadly that will not happen and the efforts of all those who met our challenge will be needed to play its part in the support and care for young victims of crime.”
