Cards on the table in donor campaign

Health Secretary Alan Milburn is backing the Basildon Evening Echo’s donor card campaign.

The initiative is trying to boost the number of card carriers to build up the number of organ transplants.

The minister has now agreed to hold talks with doctors and patient groups to discuss the issue.

He has also reaffirmed a commitment he made to Basildon MP Angela Smith when she talked about the issue, and praised the Echo campaign, in the Commons.

Mr Milburn said: “It is very, very important in my view that we increase the number of people with organ donor cards. I carry one. It does not cost anything. It just means that you can help someone else.”

The 69 donors who signed up on the first recruitment event held at the Atlantis nightclub have strengthened the campaign to find 2001 donors this year to add to the NHS organ donor register.
