Campaign wins railway station revamp

Railway stations at Bexhill and Cooden Beach are to be refurbished after a long campaign by the local newspaper.

The dilapidated stations, near Hastings in East Sussex, have been subject to a long-running campaign by the Bexhill-on-Sea Observer.

But the renovation boost is tinged with bad news, as Railtrack revealed in the paper that the move could spell the end of hopes for a new station for Bexhill.

Railtrack confirmed to the Observer this week that it is embarking on a £520,000 refurbishment at Cooden Beach, and is about to put plans for a revamp of Bexhill Station to Rother council.

Rail operator Connex confirmed that it has been in detailed discussion with Railtrack over refurbishment of both stations.

But while work at Cooden Beach has begun and is due to end by November, long-term plans for Bexhill are still undecided.

A Railtrack spokesman told long-suffering passengers through the Observer: “Railtrack have developed a scheme for Bexhill Station and this is currently being approved internally.

“We are going to hold informal talks with the council in the next couple of weeks to advise them of the scheme and then we will be able to let you know exactly what is going on.”
