Campaign boosts donors

Readers of the Cambridge Evening News have flocked to become organ donors in the month since the newspaper launched its Carry a Card campaign.

Two hundred and three readers have already signed up for the National Organ Register, in what health chiefs are hailing a “fantastic effort”.

Health minister Lord Phillip Hunt said: “We are delighted the Cambridge Evening News is making this tremendous effort. We look forward to more people from Cambridge signing up.”

Others have been quick to praise the campaign – including transplant service manager at Addenbrooke’s hospital Peter Mercer, who said: “This is a fantastic effort, it is excellent news.

“We are very pleased that this number of people within the News circulation area have elected to take time to add their names.”

Steve Donaldson, acting chief executive at Papworth Hospital, said: “Staff are delighted that so many News readers have signed up for organ donor cards. We have 52 patients waiting for life-saving transplants and this support helps to provide hope for them.”

The campaign has had backing from local celebrities and MPs as well as featuring promotional events to rally public support.
