Call to outlaw bogus cabbies

Support for a Manchester Evening News campaign to stamp out bogus cab drivers has come from all quarters.

The paper is informing the public of the dangers after a further attack on a young woman brought the number of victims attacked and raped after getting into ‘bogus cabs’ to six in just one month.

The latest victim, a 24-year-old, was groped and bitten by the bogus cabbie as she returned home from a night out with friends in the city centre.

The new attack came just days after the launch of the newspaper campaign highlighting the dangers of pirate cabs.

Among the solutions to the problem is a suggestion to colour code genuine cabs to make them easily identifiable.

A Manchester Evening News investigation found revellers undeterred by the dangers as they queued for unlicensed cabs after a night out.

But a police spokesperson warned: “Anyone getting into a taxi must make absolutely sure that it is a genuine cab.

“This sort of offence is common and the risks involved are huge.”
