Blanket coverage aims to save threatened service

A weekly newspaper is tackling one of the biggest community issues in its patch – the fight to save four post offices.

The Bucks Herald carried a front page article, which ran inside onto page two, a double-page spread to analyse the issues and an editorial comment inside.

Since the launch of the campaign a week ago, more than 350 people have completed petition slips printed in the paper and it has gained the support of town, district and county councillors and many other groups in the town.

There is also an online petition to sign on its website.

Editor of the Aylesbury paper, David Summers, said: “This is a real community issue, not only would members of the public be losing a vital service but they would also lose the heart of their community.”

The cuts would hit the elderly the hardest, in some areas leaving them with a walk of more than a mile to reach their nearest post office.

Every week until the end of the public consultation period, The Bucks Herald will be running stories examining every aspect of the issue, and will present its coverage, and the petitions, to the Post Office.

Aylesbury mayor Ray Ghent said: “I’m extremely pleased The Bucks Herald is leading from the front on this. We will do everything we can to support the paper’s campaign.”
