Big money for train bounty hunters

People who spot railway vandals in Leicester could be in line for a big cash prize – thanks to a new campaign from the Leicester Mercury.

The paper has teamed up with some major names in the railway industry to launch the Stay off the Tracks campaign to promote safety around railway lines.

And to show its support, Railtrack has doubled its reward for information leading to the conviction of a railway vandal or trespasser from £1,000 to £2,000.

As part of the campaign, the Mercury has printed thousands of posters which will be displayed at newsagents across the region.

The paper also gave out a credit-card size card carrying the number of a hotline for anyone who spots anything untoward taking place near train tracks.

Midland Mainline, Central Trains and the British Transport Police have given the campaign their backing.

Railtrack vandalism manager, Marie Grimes, said: “Staff and passengers are put at risk by vandalism often carried out by children, sometimes as young as five or six.”
