Argus snappers in racism project

Racism is being tackled by The Argus with input from its staff into a new calendar.

It is to promote the work of the Newport Forum to Counter Racial Harassment.

The paper is joining the initiative in a bid to inspire readers to back the campaign.

Argus photographers took a series of shots of well-known community figures for the calendar.

They includes national figures who have all had first-hand experience of race-related issues, such as sportsmen Christian Malcolm, Jamie Baulch and Simon Raiwalui, as well as people better-known locally including the imam of a local mosque, a GP, magistrate, head teachers and probation officer.

The calendar was designed by Ruth Salt in the Argus’s commercial services department, in a project managed by assistant editor Nicole Garnon.

The Argus joined forces with Gwent Police, Newport Council and Gwent Education on the project.

Editor Gerry Keighley said: “We should all work tirelessly to remove the causes of racism from our society.

“Our aim should be to replace ignorance with understanding and tolerance, so that all human beings are valued equally.”

Some 5,000 copies of the calendar will be distributed among local businesses, councils and other police forces around the country, as well as to national organizations.
