Anglian papers forge new link

Two newspapers have joined forces in a bid to improve safety on a busy A-road between Norfolk and Suffolk.

The Evening News, Norwich, is teaming up with the Evening Star in Ipswich to win changes on the A140, which runs between Norfolk and Suffolk.

It is the first time the sister papers have worked together to put pressure on the authorities.

Evening News editor David Bourn said: “”The A140 is a vital link between Norfolk and Suffolk but the appalling toll of injuries and fatalities in recent years suggests that urgent and decisive action should be taken to make it safer for the thousands who use it every day.

“By combining with our sister paper in Ipswich to fight for improvements to this killer stretch of road, we hope to speed the process along. Both Norfolk and Suffolk county councils are aware of what has become a horrendous problem but actions speak much louder than words.

Nigel Pickover, editor of the Star, said: “We are going to drive the two county councils very hard in pressing for improvements.

“We will also be targeting drivers’ behaviour as many accidents are the result of driver error and speed. People are desperate to get on with their busy lives but we want to say ‘for the sake of five minutes here and five minutes there, a life could be saved’.

“Our campaign will be ongoing, dedicated, hard-hitting and with impact.”

It was launched after the death of one driver, and three subsequent serious injury accidents along the stretch in the last month. Three people are still in hospital.
