Advertiser urges readers to help Kick The Habit

Walsall’s director of public health has urged Walsall Advertiser readers to back its Kick The Habit campaign.

Dr Sam Ramaiah said the multi-pronged way to add to existing measures to stave off the horrors of drug addiction was the only way to tackle an escalating problem for Walsall.

The campaign aims to bring a 24-hour drug crisis centre to the borough, and the paper has launched a petition to enable readers to show their support.

The centre is the brainchild of Barbara Cooper, who nursed her teenage son back from the brink of a life-threatening addiction.

Through her pressure group Escape, she has received £1,000 to start a fundraising programme, but more than £25,000 is needed for the centre, which would provide emergency support and advice for addicts and their families.

Barbara said: “It is a desperate situation. This centre is something that Walsall badly needs to provide people with help.”
