A year of community action

The Wirral Globe has reflected on a year of action in the community, achieved with help from its readers.

The newspaper launched an initiative to add extra names to the nation’s organ donor register and won the backing of Wirral Council. The local authority has now sent organ registration forms to all its staff with payslips and plans to post them with council mail-outs next year.

The paper also joined forces with Merseyside Police in a CarWatch campaign to stem the scourge of car crime in Wirral.

Wirral social services said it was delighted with the response after The Wirral Globe helped it sign up desperately-needed foster carers with a front page appeal.

And an appeal for volunteers for the Lonsdale Trust in Wallasey led to seven Globe volunteers turning up in a week. The charity, formerly Wallasey Age Concern, is still looking for five more to complete its challenge to the paper of finding a dozen Millennium volunteers.

The newspaper’s Let’s Face It Together initiative also raised more than £1,000 for a life-saving MRI scanner at its local Arrowe Park Hospital in a matter of weeks thanks to generous readers.
