A tale of two cities

Survivors of the Gujarat earthquake may soon be living in Southampton if the Daily Echo gets its way – Southampton in India, that is.

The newspaper has teamed up with a local temple to raise money to for the victims of the disaster which left thousands of people homeless in January.

Now the Vedic Society Temple and the Daily Echo are thinking over plans to build a village in Gujarat with the £32,000 already raised by the public and name it after their city in recognition of its fund-raising efforts.

Naresh Sonchatla, vice-president of the Vedic Society Temple, said: “We have two main choices now of either building a small village in Gujarat or to work with other organisations in a bigger area, and build something like a school or a hospital.”

Whatever is decided, it will be called Southampton Vedic.

He added: “It would be nice if people who have donated money to see, if they ever went to India, a project and say they helped make this.”
