8,800 support paper's by-pass plea

A long-running campaign by the Torquay Herald Express for a Kingskerswell bypass has been backed by more than 80 per cent of South Devon’s residents.

The drive for the bypass had already been supported by 8,800 Herald Express readers.

And now a public consultation with 840 people revealed that the most common response was to “just get on with it”.

The new road bid was put before an influential transport committee with a hotline straight to the Government.

A planning application could now be submitted early next year after it was originally feared that the project would not be considered until at least 2005.

The Herald Express reported how bypassing the congested A380 that links Torbay with the rest of the country could bring 8,000 jobs and £170m into the South Devon economy.
