3,000 sign hospital protest

Almost 3,000 Cornishman readers have signed up to the newspaper’s campaign to boost services at a local hospital.

The West Cornwall Hospital is thought to be at risk of having services taken away – which could result in its closure.

But the Cornishman, with the backing of the local MP, has launched a campaign Don’t Move It – Improve It to save the centre.

A deluge of mail has arrived at the newspaper’s offices in which readers are saying how determined they are to make health chiefs realise how important the hospital is.

Cornishman editor Richard Vanhinsbergh said: “Never before, in the history of this campaigning newspaper has there been such an overwhelming response on any single issue.

“It is time that those involved in the review sat up and took notice of what the people of Penwith want from their hospital.”

The county council has passed a resolution asking the watchdog group, the community health council, to “engage and debate” every issue surrounding the proposed changes.

The paper is welcoming everyone’s involvement as a glimmer of hope but warns that people must not become complacent.
