200 on the march to back Herald campaign

Residents turned out in force for a protest march to back their local newspaper and show the town’s anger at plans to close four post offices.

Nearly 200 people brought Aylesbury town centre to a standstill in support of The Bucks Herald’s Save Our Post Offices campaign.

The mayor, Ray Ghent, was handed a petition signed by more than 500 Herald readers asking the Post Office to rethink its proposal.

It is now the end of a six-week period of public consultation on the planned closures, and the march, organised by local politicians, could prove influential in showing the Post Office the strength of local opposition.

A representative from the Post Office will be handed the petitions, signed by Bucks Herald readers, this week.

Editor David Summers, said: “I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in this campaign, both in the march and by signing the petitions – I only hope the Post Office listens to our concerns.”

  • Coun Freda Roberts was last month set a challenge by the paper to visit an alternative Post Office to test claims they were equally accessible. She walked from Prebendal Farm to the High Street to demonstrate the distance pensioners would have to walk if the Somerville Way branch closed.

She said: “I did the walk and I know it’s a damn long way.”
