1,600 readers say no to sculpture

A phone poll organised by the Lincolnshire Echo showed that 1,686 people were opposed to plans for a controversial £90,000 Millennium Arch sculpture – but 11 city councillors have still voted for it to go ahead.

The proposed arch would span the River Witham in Lincoln’s City Square.

Support for the sculpture, and the proposed location, came from the majority of councillors on the city council’s policy and resources committee despite the news of a Lincolnshire Echo telephone poll which showed a strong objection from more than 1,600 people, plus 71 individual letters and faxes of opposition.

The council’s deputy director of planning, Peter Boswell, said: “This is an issue of planning, not of artistic judgement.

“It is not detrimental to the conservation area, or the listed buildings, namely High Bridge.”

Councillor for Park ward, Patrick Vaughan, said: “We have to remember that there would have been this sort of public reaction to the cathedral when they were building that.”

Echo reporter Emma Snedden said a final decision on the arch was expected to be taken at the city council meeting on Tuesday, October 10.
