Business as usual at the Chronicle

It’s business as usual at the Oldham Evening Chronicle following a tense few days.

Racial tension in the town rose to the surface at the weekend when rioting broke out between white and Asian youths.

And the Evening Chronicle found itself in the news, as well as reporting it, when a petrol bomb was thrown through the window of its offices.

It was claimed by some that the attack may have been a protest about the paper’s reporting of race issues.

But news editor Mike Attenborough said things seemed to be calming down and the paper had not felt the need to seek safety advice for staff from the police.

He said: “We’re not taking any special precautions, just using common sense.

“One photographer came under a bit of abuse at the weekend – well, they pretty much all did.

“But we don’t have a problem. Our staff tend to go out in pairs and we tell them that if they find themselves in any danger, they should walk away and go back a little later.”
