Bungee jumping reporter- at 83

Barbara Butcher has earned trust, respect and affection in half a century of reporting the news from Ashford and district for the Kentish Express.

But this week, veteran newshound Barbara – the oldest working journalist in Kent – shocked even her closest friends with news that at the age of 83, she’s signed up for a sponsored bungee jump.

Miss Butcher was first in the queue to volunteer for the terrifying 200ft drop in the Wye Charity Challenge on August 5.

She will be raising funds for Sittingbourne’s Demelza House Children’s Hospice.

Delighted organiser Trevor Dry, landlord of the King’s Head, Wye, said:

“We believe Barbara will be the oldest bungee jumper in the country, if not the world.”

Barbara, though, is playing down her forthcoming feat.

She said: “I was invited to join the jump and agreed but don’t quite see what the fuss is about.

“I know I am fit and capable of doing it, although I will be having a medical just to be sure, and hope to raise a lot of sponsorship money.”
