Bullying ordeal leads to web support

A Yorkshire Evening Post reporter has set up her own anti-bullying web site after her son John fell victim to classroom thugs.

Liz Carnell created www.bullying.co.uk using the knowledge she gained taking North Yorkshire County Council to court.

She claimed it could have done more to protect him – and won the case.

It was during the proceedings that she came up with the idea of setting up a resource for parents and children in the same position.

Liz told HoldtheFrontPage: “We set up the web site because it was the cheapest way to get through to the most people.”

The site offers advice for children, parents and teachers on how to deal with the problem of bullying.

It also offers legal advice for anyone trying to take action against their local authorities.

Liz explained: “When John was in trouble, we didn’t really know what to do. That’s when I realised how useful it would be to have a resource of information on bullying.”

Liz and John, who now works in IT, set up the site together. John takes charge of the design side and Liz produces all the editorial content.

The site went ‘live’ in April 1999 and in its first year had more than 44,000 visitors.
